Week 103_Blind Date
DITTO
Blind Date
14.12.2017 - 28.01.2018
CURRENT - Milan
In a general tension towards acceleration and the swirling multiplication of images, DITTO collective takes on the task of the archaeologist, manifesting itself in CURRENT’s space. Reflecting on the act of fruition and questioning the exhibition space, DITTO leaves traces and clues of an intervention that has already occurred and proposes an intimate meeting with the public.
The visitor is invited to consume this encounter later: taking home a USB pendrive – as if it was an archaeological find of the future – he/she will examine the content by him/herself, thus having the possibility to manipulate it, share it, delete it at his/her discretion. Obscured and entirely painted black, CURRENT is limited in its nature of exhibition space to be experienced elsewhere.
In a world that is now almost totally feasible as a representation, DITTO’s solo show function as a literal “blind date” between the space itself and the spectator during which the unique aggregative aspect of the exhibition event and the visual fruition of the artwork are irremediably separated.
What kind of expectations are created by the physical space and the virtual space respectively? Does remote fruition have a weakened and less incisive aesthetic impact? How is the perceptual gap in digital fruition solved?
Blind Date reveals the contradictions of space by questioning display conventions and perspectives.
I would like there to exist places that are stable, unmoving, intangible, untouched and almost untouchable, unchanging, deep-rooted; places that might be points of reference, or departure, of origin (…).Such places don’t exist, and it’s because they don’t exist that space becomes a question, ceases to be self-evident, ceased to be incorporated, ceases to be appropriated. Space is a doubt: I have constantly to mark it, to designate it. It’s never mine, never given to me, I have to conquer it. (Georges Perec, Species of spaces, 1973-74)
DITTO is a collective of artists, curators, music producers and graphic designers. A changing entity which aspires to creep into the "concave mold of the contemporary" to give back a shape of it, leaving traces that speak of future archaeological discoveries. Solo exhibitions: Petra, Paolo Giovio Archeological Museum, Como (SIDE Festival, Digital Vs Analogic), 2017; Sono contento che tu sia lì, Gioconda Radio, Studi Festival, Milan, 2017; Belong, Plasma Plastic Modern Art, Milan, 2016; OOPArt, Crema, 2016.
CURRENT is a platform started by artists and curators. It is based in an independent space in Milan, a place for research and exhibition of contemporary art with a multidisciplinary approach. CURRENT is interested in the evolution of new visual cultures and the political implication of art in the age of digital capitalism. CURRENT organized and curated several solo and group show since 2016 in its space, a curatorial talk at Triennale, Milan in 2017 and participated in events like NESXT Festival, Q35, Turin, 2016; Outer Space, FuturDome, Milan, 2017, Rose Bouquet, Marsèlleria Permanent Exhibition, Milan, 2017.
